LAMENESS ALERTS

Lameness is one of the most significant issues affecting dairy cattle, compromising health and welfare and impacting on fertility and productivity. Our award-winning Lameness Detection module gives you the key information you need to help you reduce the number, severity and duration of lameness cases.

CowAlert monitors and analyses each cow’s daily mobility to create a unique lameness status for each animal. Lameness Alerts are generated daily to help you identify and prioritise issues and intervene early. All the data is securely stored to build up a detailed history of your herd. A simple herd-level overview graph lets you quickly identify trends over time and monitor the impact of management changes.

THE FACTS

3rd most important

Lameness has been identified as the third most important health-related economic loss, after fertility and mastitis.

(*Bruijnies et al., 2010)

Lameness Alerts

4.6% Lower Yield

Mobility score 3 cows have a 4.6% lower milk yield than a score 0 cow.

(O’Connor et al., 2020 )

IceRobotics

£320 PER COW

Average cost of lameness case, £320 per cow.

(Willshire & Bell, 2009)

IceRobotics

270 – 857KG

Lameness reduces milk production by between
270 – 857kg per lactation. The reduced milk production may occur up to 5 months after treatment for lameness!

(Huxley, 2013)

8 LITRES LESS

A lame cow on average produces 8 litres of milk less per day compared with
non-lame cows.

How Do Lameness Alerts Work?

lameness alerts

Daily Lameness Alerts provide a quick overview of the lameness status of your herd and help you prioritise actions through easy colour coding identification:
Red: Cows with a high probability of being lame and should be investigated
Amber: Cows with a medium probability of being lame and should be monitored
Blue: Cows that have been diagnosed as lame
Green: Cows with a low probability of being lame
Improving cows: Identifies cows whose lameness probability has decreased, or stayed the same this week, against last week’s average.
Deteriorating cows: Identifies cows whose lameness probability has increased this week against last week’s average.

What’s Reported?

CowAlert’s last 7-day list allows you to investigate your herd’s new lameness alerts and the new orange lameness alerts, allowing for early intervention. Within this new feature, you can manage your herd’s lameness alerts more efficiently by adding the cow onto a vet or foot trimmer list which can then be emailed or printed if required.

Once a cow is on the vet list and subsequently seen by the vet, they can be moved onto the treated list. CowAlert records this treatment process for future analysis. Similarly, the foot trimmer list can be accessed from the alert status page but allows for more detailed diagnostic feedback. The feedback from the foot trimmer can be inputted into CowAlert detailing the location of the lameness issue along with the diagnosis, date and any relevant notes, such as treatment provided.

CowAlert’s individual cow lameness history allows you to examine the lameness status of each cow. Including the daily lameness probability for a single cow, compared with her 7 day rolling lameness probability and the herd average. The Herd Overview provides the herd lameness history, enabling you to easily spot trends and see the impact of a particular action on the farm, such as hoof-trimming. Each cow’s daily lameness status is stored, building up a picture over time of herd lameness. This provides a quick overview of the proportion of lame and healthy cows.

1 “The lameness alerts highlight the cows that we need to examine and creates a daily inspection list. We see this as another valuable tool in our lameness toolbox which is helping us to pick up lame cows earlier and reduce the herd’s lameness” Jacqui Browne
Pomeroy Farm, Wiltshire
2 “The fact that you can access everything from your mobile phone, and you don’t have to keep going back into the house to see the data is brilliant! It’s an excellent management tool and allows us to make well-informed choices from the data in front of us, saving us time and improving the accuracy of the judgements we make when it comes to the productivity of the herd.” David Hyslop
Meinside Farm, Lockerbie
3 “Since using CowAlert we’re no longer tied to the cow shed, our calving interval has reduced from 415 to 390 days and conception rate has improved by 17%. Overall I regard CowAlert as a sound investment. It has added to the bottom line in terms of both calf and milk production and freed up time which is also a major cost in farming today.” Richard Marshall
Rylands Farm, Omagh
4 “The cows that CowAlert is picking up-even the trained eye would miss. Getting on top of lameness is so important. It’s milk in the tank. An uncomfortable cow gives less milk. It’s welfare and welfare is paramount.” Alan Steer
Field Barn Farm, Dorset
5 “The Lameness module is making us look at cows we wouldn’t have previously looked at. We have found cows that have had bruising that could have developed into an ulcer. It means we pre-empt issues before they become a problem” Michael Yates
East Logan Farm, Dumfriesshire
